How To Keep Your Child Safe

Be Aware

According to ncjrs.gov, among the 600,000 to 800,000 people who are trafficked across international borders, 50% are children. The average age of these children is between 12 and 14. At the Child Liberation Foundation, we are fully committed to eradicating child trafficking in the United States and worldwide. We do this by raising awareness and equipping you with the knowledge that leads to prevention. It is especially crucial now that schools are reopening and children are heading back to the classroom. There are four important tips to help you keep your child safe from trafficking. Read on to learn more and visit the Child Liberation Foundation site today.

Know Name, Address, and Phone Numbers

Ensure that your child, especially the younger ones, knows both parents’ phone numbers. They should also know both parents’ full names and descriptions. Make sure they also know their full home address. This is critical information for your child to have in case of an emergency.

Talk About Kidnapping With Your Child

As a parent, you should strive to have an open relationship with your child based on trust and clear communication. Warn them about the dangers of social media, strangers, and kidnapping. Tell them never to provide personal information over the internet. While living in a world where we have to warn our children about strangers is no fun, it can help keep them safe. Let them know not to trust just anyone on the street and to never go with anyone they do not know.

Set Boundaries

Setting boundaries can help keep your child safe as well. Let your child know where they can go and where they cannot. Whenever your child wants to go somewhere other than where you have allowed, they should ask for your permission and let you know where they’re going so you know their whereabouts. If there is a need, you could accompany your child and supervise.

Occasionally Perform Practice Scenarios

Run drills with your child and practice what they should do if they find themselves in an emergency scenario. Have them practice reciting the vital information you had them memorize, like your names, numbers, and address. Teach them to defend themselves when being abducted by screaming, fighting, and causing a scene. While this may not be something you want to have to practice with your child, it could help protect them from the worst possible scenario.

Your child’s security starts at home, with you. So, make sure that you have imparted these tips to your child to keep them safe as they return to school. Always take an active role in your child’s life and talk to them openly. At the Child Liberation Foundation, we believe that to end child trafficking nationwide, prevention must be as large a focus as finding, liberating, and prosecuting child traffickers.
