Empowering young girls in Cartagena is at the heart of our mission. On June 3rd, 2025, 32 first- and second-grade girls at Colegio Juan Bautista Scalabrini experienced this empowerment first-hand. They participated in the Cuidando de Mí (“Caring for Me”) workshop — a joyful and transformative event designed to teach body safety, self-worth, and personal protection.
Child Liberation Foundation’s local team, in partnership with Fundación Mi Refugio de Esperanza, led the workshop for empowering young girls. From the very beginning, the room was filled with energy and warmth. The goal was simple: to help each girl understand her value, rights, and voice.
Creating a Safe and Joyful Space
Facilitator José García from Girarte kicked off the morning with playful activities. These fun moments built trust and opened space for deeper conversations. Smiles and laughter soon gave way to songs with meaning.
Together, the girls sang “Yo sé cuidar mi cuerpo” (“I know how to take care of my body”). This song, full of positive affirmation, reinforced one of the Empowering young girls workshop’s key messages — every child has the right to feel safe and respected.
Building Self-Worth Through Empowering Exercises
One of the most powerful moments came during the mirror exercise. Each girl stood before a mirror and proudly declared, “I am brave, strong, and special.” These simple words sparked visible confidence and joy in each young face.
Before leaving, every participant received an Empowering young girls school supply kit. This practical gift supported their educational journey and celebrated their participation. However, it also marked the final kit available — reminding us of the growing need for more resources.
Lasting Impact and a Call to Action
The workshop closed with a review of key lessons. The girls demonstrated strong understanding of body safety, personal boundaries, and the importance of speaking up. Their enthusiasm showed just how deeply these lessons resonated.
